Metal vs. Clear Braces: Which Is Right for You?
Compare metal and clear ceramic braces — appearance, durability, cost and treatment time — with guidance from Gresham and Camas orthodontists.

Traditional metal braces
Modern metal braces are smaller and smoother than the braces many parents remember. Stainless-steel brackets are extremely durable, which makes them ideal for active kids and teens and for complex corrections that need precise control.
They’re also the most fun: patients choose new band colors at each adjustment visit. Metal braces are usually the most affordable treatment option, too.
Clear ceramic braces
Clear braces work exactly like metal braces but use tooth-colored ceramic brackets that blend in with your smile. They’re popular with older teens and adults who want the reliability of braces without a metallic look.
Ceramic brackets are slightly larger and can be more fragile, so they’re typically recommended for patients who can be careful with hard foods.
Treatment time and results
Treatment length depends far more on your case than on the bracket material. Most patients wear braces between 12 and 24 months. What matters most is a carefully designed plan and consistent appointments.
Making the decision
